Once upon a time there were two little girls called Lyla and Lexi and they were best friends. They played together, laughed together and loved each other. Then one day the little girl called Lyla got on a big plane with her family and flew away to the other side of the world to a strange, wet country. The little girls were sad to say goodbye to each other but promised to stay friends.
After only a couple of months in the far away country, Lyla received a parcel from her friend, Lexi. The parcel containing a pair of gold sneakers. Lexi was going a big new adventure to childcare and because she was extra special her mummy gave her a pair of magic gold sneakers to keep her brave and remind her she is awesome, because thats what you need to remember when starting a new adventure. Lexi and her mummy thought that because Lyla was on such a big new adventure as well, she needed a pair of matching magic gold sneakers just like Lexi.
Lexi and Lyla have been best friends since they met at CPEC (Cerebral Palsy Education Centre) in Melbourne when Lyla was just 18 months and Lexi was just 2. They loved seeing each other at therapy and at one point had to be separated because looking at each other and smiling was more interesting than paying attention to the teacher. In the 2 years that they were at CPEC they learnt so much together and inspired each other to push harder, try new things and to be brave. It was Lexi (and her mum’s) bravery on the swing that made me try putting Lyla on the swings in the park which she loves so much, they are both daredevils and love going high! They have both come so far, developing their own feisty, funny and cheeky personalities. I like to think that in any lifetime Lexi and Lyla would have been friends and it just so happens that in this lifetime they are both facing more challenges every day than most of us face in a lifetime and having a good friend to share all that with is important for anyone.
And when that friend is very far away there are always gold sneakers to remind you to be brave and fabulous and try new things.
We love you Lexi!
